Word has been received that Lieut; Ivon Standish, son of Mr. A. Standish of New Plymouth, who is undergoing a course of instruction at Aldershot, England, has passed the examination for hj» captaincy. ~ A Palmerston North wire states that it is understood that His Excellency the Governor has taken a lease of "Higjxden," the residence of .Jjjhe Hon. Mrs. Walter Johnston, at' Awahuri, during the absence of Mrs. Johnston. .•-"J
Mr; John Young, who for the last nineyears ljas ibeen licensee of the Hutt'Family Hotel, died at Lower Hutt on Sekjiikday. The deceased, who,was seventytwo years of age, arrived in New Zeajand in 185fl. He saw serviclTwith the volunteers in the Maori war of 1863, receiving in one engagement a gunshot wound in the head. After the war he joined the. surveying staff of the Public Work* De'-* partment, his work lying principally iij the Maanwatu and Wanganui districts. Later he was appointed head storekeeper for the department, retiring to Lower Hutt. ■ •'!
