NEW ZEALAND AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIPS.
CHAMPION BREAKS TWO RECORDS. By Telegraph—Press Association. / Christchurch, Last Night. The results of the championship events at the New Zealand amateur swimming championship meeting were as follows: 220 Yards. —M. E. Champion (Waitemata) 1, (X Welson (Waitemata) 2, Geoff Seymour (Napier) 3. H. Jerred (Opawa), P. A. A. Schwartz (East Christ- > church) and R. Healey (Thorndon) also cofnpeted. Time, 2min 37 3-ssec—a New Zealand record.
Half-mile.—M. E. Champion (Waitemata) 1, C. Welson (Waitemata) 2, C. H. H. Rich (Opawa) 3. Time, 12min 7 l-ssec—a New Zealand record.
The referee gave his decision in the protest by Newman in the 880 yards, and said that he regretted he was unable to uphold it, but would give Newman and the other two competitors who were not able to compete an opportunity to swim the course in order to obtain a standard badge. It is understood that the protest is to be taken to the council of the New Zealand Swimming Association. The Yaldhurst Cup went to Auckland with 28 points, Hawke's Bay and Canterbury each scoring one point. ' At the conclusion of the programme Newman (Dunedin), Schwartz and Hill (Christchurch), who were unable to compete in the 880 yards championship, awam the distance, but none of them managed to get standard time.
