THE BAND CONTEST.
By Telegraph—Press Association. Gisborne, Last Night. Th.# North Island bafnd contest has concluded. Waihi and Whangarei bands left on Saturday, and Westport, Wanganui and Palmerston North bands left today.
IMPROYED FIRE APPLIANCES. ■Gisborne, Last Night. The Gisborne Fire Board are contemplating the purchase of a motor engin«. Inspector Hugo has arrived to confer on the matter.
THE FLAXBOURNE ESTATE,
Blenheim, Saturday Night. Ten thousand two hundred and seven-ty-ttiree acres vf the Flaxbourne estate were offered at auction in Blenheim today on behalf of the trustees of the late Sir C. Clifford and Sir F- Weld. There was a large attendance, and the land offered—eight sections—was all disposed of. Prices ranged from £4 15s to £l6 per acre.
HOSPITAL SATURDAY. Gisborne, Last Night. Yesterday was Hospital Saturday, and £l5O 14s 3d was collected in the town. Hotel collections and country results have yet to be ascertained. Last year £240 was collected, but it is hoped that this will be exceeded when the final results are made up.
WARNING TO SEAMEN.
Wellington, Saturday. Two seamen named Thomas Byran and William Syme, who deserted from the steamer Ngahere here in December last, were prosecuted to-day as a warning to other seamen who might be inclined to act similarly, It was stated that the men boarded the ehip with liquor in their possession and refused to obey orders. They then left the ship, causing much inconvenience. As the defendants are men who signed articles in New Zealand for New Zealand trade they could not be imprisoned, but the court made an order that defendants forfeit wages te the amount of £4 each.
BENEFACTIONS FOR WANGAN'UI. Wanganui, Saturday. By the will of the late Henry Sargeant, the Wanganui Observatory benefits to the extent of £'soo, the Museum £250 and the Orchestral Society £250. All his properties in the borough are Mrs. Sargeant's for life. The residue is bequeathed to the Public Trustee upon trust to pay legacies and expenses and the balance of residue is to be paid to the Wanganui Corporation to establish and maintain in the borough a fine art gallery and acquire pictures and other works of art. After Mrs. Sargeant's death the balance of the estate reverts to the Corporation for the same purpose. The estate is worth many thousands.
ARBITRATION COURT METHODS. Wellington, Saturday. Regarding the complaint bv the Merchants' Assistants Union of the dilatory methods of the Arbitration Court in hearing a point in their case, it is -officially stated that the application in question was only lodged with the Clerk fo Awards on February 5, and it will be hea»d next month.
