TURF TOPICS. I (By "Moturoa.") St. Petersburg was the only doublewinner at the Taranaki meeting. Silva ran two fine races this week, and is the most consistent hurdler in the province. It is reported that the Highden pair, Bronze and Boanerges, have been supported very heavily for the Wanganui double.

Ashby was started four times at New Plymouth, and scored one first, a second, and two thirds.

St. Bill had a big army of Wangamii followers the first day, but I did not J hear of much monej r being lost on him on Thursday. The fact that Obsono has been paid up for in the Newmarket Handicap points to the probability that the horse will remain in Australia, and not be brought back to New Zealand as reported. Gladiole was the smartest sprinter seen out at the local meeting. She was well supported by her party each day. It is a pleasure to record the success of a mare that is always out to win if possible.

Royal Arms ran right up to his private reputation in the Cup, and was not disgraced by having to put up with second berth to that good mare Lady Menschikoff. The latter generally runs well at New Plymouth, and the usual big dividend was in evidence on Wednesday. First day's form was a good guide on Thursday; Silva, Gladiole, Aloha. Plantation, St. Petersburg, and Ohinee, who ran well forward ou the opening day, catching the judge's eye. Coromandel and Crown Pearl showed improved form, but neither had a good run on the first day.

It would be interesting to know how much money "the guns" lost over Allure in the First Hurdles. Away from the course—all down the line as fur as Wel-

lington—the very dogs were barking

Allure, and no doubt the ex-bookmakers (sic) were whistling like canaries when the result came through. A Sydney paper states that Bridge has

been sent to Melbourne to be schooled by D. J. Price. The big New Zealander is just the cut of a hurdler, and should pay his way at the illegitimate game. Sandy Paul was running on at the finish of his races here, and should be' cherry ripe for the Wanganui meeting. i It is reported that Nyland will not start in the Flying Handicap at Wanganui, and the way some punters are rushing Boanerges it looks as if the latter will be Highden's sole representative. After Cornelian's easy win at Hawera last week his running here is hard to understand. Most people reckon that the stewards took a very lenient view of Copestake's apparently indifferent riding. After winning at Gisborne with 13st 101b Continuance was asked to carry 14st 101b at the Poverty Bay meeting. Needless to say, the horse, did not start. Well-primed professional jockey (to starter who is being very particular): "Oh, let us go, Captain, darlint; let us go before the whisky dies out of us!"— Punch.

Passed away in Sydney last weeic, after a long struggle with Death, our old friend "Bill" Lyons, metallician, horse-owner, bowler, and cueist. Bill was a prime favorite in Auckland and a familiar figure at all sporting gatherings in the Dominion.' Many good horses carried- his colors, the best being Petioleum, Catesby, Woodpecker, Lone Hand, Too Soon, Cambria and Mayflower. Mr. E. Bidwell's horses, Ovation and Submersion, have been scratched for all engagements at the Wanganui meeting. Ashby, who scored on Wednesday, was recently bought for 30 guineas. New Zealanders accepted for the Newmarket Handicap |are Obsono, Motoa, Sharpshooter and Chief Lochiel. Gunboat, now owned by Mr. A. E. Connolly, and Nobel are still in the Australian Cup.
