SOCIAL NEWS. THE RACES. The Taranaki Jockey Club held their autumn meeting last Wednesday and Thursday. The first day was rather cloudy, and just before the last race the rain came down in sheets, and consequently a great many pretty frocks were ruined. The first day I noticed — Mrs. Walker, blue silk, with black ninon over-dress; black toque. Miss Read, grey, with black satin scar!, lined with pink; black hat. Miss Pridham, white muslin, grey coat, black hat.

• Mr. and Mrs. Dryden are leaving early next week for Sydney, Mrs. W. Shaw is leaving for Auckland, where she intends taking up her residence.
Miss G. Bewley has returned after a holiday to Wellington.
