Rev. Frank Hales, from Invercargill, arrived by mail train last night. He. assumes his pastorage of the Baptist Church to-m'orrow. Mr. C. Carter has written to the Taranaki County Council regretting his ini» ability to act as its representative on, the New Plymouth Technical School Ad-' visory Committee. i "That the members of this board desire to express their heartfelt sympathy with Mrs. Fitzherbert and family in their great bereavement," was the text of a motion passed at yesterday's meeting of the Harbor Board.
The death occurred on Thursaay at ; Wellington of Mr. Edward Reaves, a pioneer merchant of Wellington. * Mr. Reevee, who had reached the age of seventy-two years, was at one. time wharfinger on the Queen's wharf. Mr. H. W. Climie, consulting engineer to the New Plymouth Borough Council, will be at New Plymouth on the 22nd inst in order to visit the electric light works at Mangorei in company with the Mayor (Mr. G. W. Browne) 'and councillors.
Mr. David Johnston, one of the oldest New Zealand-bprn residents of 'Wellington, and formerly Collector of Customs at this port, died at Wellington on) Thursday. Mr. Johnston was seventy" years of age, having been born in Wellington in 1842, his parents then living at the site of Te Aro House.
A London cablegram reports that r ,jf; is officially announced that Sir Francis May, Governor of Fiji, has been ap-, pointed Governor of Hongkong. Sir E,-Sweet-Escott, Governor of the Leeward Islands, will succeed Sir Francis May. Sir Francis May was Colonial Secretary l at Hongkong until hardly twelve monthsago, when he was appointed Governor of/ Fiji.
The New Plymouth Harbor Board yesterday decided to place on record its appreciation of the satisfactory manner in which Captain Newton had performed hir duties as harbormaster during the time he has been in the board's employ. The board exceedingly regretted, the motion ran, the loss of his Captain Newton relinquishes Ms position at the end of the month.
