APPALLING SUFFERINGS.

A steamer from the East reports that a virulent type of smallpox is raging at Hong Kong, with a large percentage of deaths.

There is a severe famine in eight districts of China, covering thirty thousand square miles. There are appalling accounts of the sufferings of the people. The ancient city walls -round Canton are being destroyed by the new Republican authorities.

Many daring cases of piracy are reported on the West river and elsewhere.

Two hundred Portuguese troops have been sent from Macas to Timor to quell the native rebellion.
