CLERGYMAN AND SIBTBR DROWNED.

By T«4egia§k—Press Asroeiatioo. Hokitika, Wednesday. The Rev. Mr. Locke, vicar of Rom, and his sister, Miss Locke, were drowned J5 the big Wanganui river yesterday. They had declined the offer of a ferryman to take them across, thinking that the river crossing was safe. When halfway, across the trap capsized and the occupants were swept downstream. The bodies have not yet been recovered. The Rev. Mr.> and Miss Locke : were only recent arrivals from Cornwall, and were highly esteemed locally.

PARTICULARS OF THE VICTIMS,

Christchurch, Last Night. In reference to the drowning fatality in the big Wanganui river, Westland, yesterday, Locke came to the Christchurch diocese only six months ago. Although he was a native of Cornwall, he hfd recently been in work at Bermondsey, London. Bishop Julius received news of the sad accident from the West Coast to-day, and sent a cable message to Locke's relatives at Home. Locke and his sister were young people, and were enthusiastic workers in the service of the church.
