Owing to Herr Spahn's refusal of the Presidency, the Reichstag for the first time in history opens under a Socialist Vice-President, Herr Schiedemann being a Socialist. CRYSTAL GAZING. Calcutta, February 12. Miss Eva Montstephens has been committed for trial on a charge of poisoning Miss Garnet Orme. Accused was a believer in crystal-gazing. Miss Orme became interested, and eventually saw evidence of her immediate death, and then she mysteriously died. Accmsed, it is stated, will benefit by the will.
EXPLOSION IN A MINE. Berlin, February 12. Six persons were killed by an explosion, due to carelessness, at the Antonen Mine at Oppeler. PORCELAIN FACTORY BURtNED. Berlin, February 12. The famous ißoyal Porcelain Factory at Nymphenburg has been burnt. BRiUSH WITH SMUGGLER^. Paris, February 12. Smugglers, in a motor-car containing tons of tobacco, dashed over the Belgian frontier. Excisemen pursued and wounded one smuggler and captured the car through a tyre bursting, but the smugglers escaped.
ENGLISH ESTATE DUTY. London, February 12. The Chancery Court has decided that, owing to the domicile of the Duchess of Manchester, her American personalty is liable to English estate duty. BURSTING OP A DAM. Ottawa, February 12. A dam, utilised to furnish water-power for a colliery company's plant, broke at Union Bay, North Columbia. The great wall was swept down to the village, overwhelming the Chinese and Japanese quarter. The men were warned in time and escaped to higher ground. It is believed that only one death has occurred. Steel cars used at' the colliery were carried a hundred yards from the tracks.
