HURRICANE IN THE ISLANDS.

SEVERE DAMAGE DONE.

By Telegraph—Press Association. Auckland, Monday. News via Sydney with reference to the Fiji hurricane states that Suva, Levuka, Rewa, Navua and Viti Levi! were visited by a severe gale. The Baa and; Taana coast experienced a slight hurricane and floods. Labasa and Tavinui had a severe hurricane, while Rewa, Navua and Labasa had heavy floods. The Gronsmisbel banana crop was destroyed. The floods rose 16ft at Nausori and 45ft at Viria. Lahasa had a very bad hurricane, the damage there being estimated at £30,000. Two deaths occurred, an Indian being drowned and a Fijian killed by a house falling. The native village of Naduri, near Labasa, was razed to the ground. A hulk-keeper and a native who tried to get ashore were carried out to sea. The latest news states that Taviuni had a bad hurricane. Severe damage was done to the south-east of the island.
