A STRANGE FATALITY.

By Telegraph—Press Association.. Christchurch, Last Night. A man named Loyal Cherry, aged, 40, met with a strange death last night. He wag staying at the Masonic Hotel; And oontracted a severe attack of influenza during the night., He got out of bed and began to walk about the bedroom. Then he evidently opened the window and fell out on to a recess, which stands in front of the window, and about six feet below. The licensee and the attendants in the hotel heard him calling out and ran to his assistance, and lifted him into the hotel again. It was seen that he was in a serious condition and steps were taken to help him to recover, but he died half an hour later. It is believed he was a native of Hobart, and has a sister in Adelaide. The body was examined by a doctor, who could find no signs of a broken toe*,

A BODY RECOVERED.

Gore, Monday. The body of the boy George Edward Gaudin, who was drowned in the. Mataura river, below the falls at Mataura, on the 3rd inst., was recovered on Saturday by the lad's father, four miles below the township.

AN UNWANTED CHILD.

Auckland, Monday. At the inquest on the infant found in the harbor, medical evidenee was to the effect that the body was that of a girl, which had lived for about eight days. The jury returned a verdict of murder against some person unknown.

FATAL EXPRESS AOTDENT.

Dunedin, Monday. A fatal accident occurred in the Green Island bush at midnight on Saturday, Ezekiel Campbell, aged 48, a single man, being pinned under an express, and succumbing to a fractured skull. It is stated that Campbell was drunk, and was refused liquor at the Waterloo HcH. He had purchased three dozen 1)' "? of beer, and hired Mr. McEwen t( ve him home. McEwen missed the r< and the express was upset over a baiu. r

DROWNED IN THE WANGANUI

Wanganui, Monday. A young man named McCarthy, aged 23, was drowned at Ran'ana, up the Wanganui river, yesterday at midday. Deceased, with nine other young Europeans and two Maoris were in a canoe, which swamped and capsized in a rapid. The other occupants were rescued by the Maoris in another canoe. McCarthy was the best swimmer of the party, and it is supposed he was seized with cramp. His body was not recovered. Deceased came from Masterton. I
