ENGLAND SCORES 589. ] MAGNIFICENT BATTING. AUSTRALIA'S BIG CONTRACT. Bj Cable—Press Association—Copyright. Received 12, 7.15 p.m. Melbourne, February 12. The main question here is not will England win, but what will she win by. There was a fair attendance at the start, growing to 13,424. The wicket was good and the weather perfect. The takings were £519.
Hordern and Cotter began the attack. | The batsmen were extremely cautious,) taking half an 'hour to score 16. Cotter was relieved by Armstrong, who bowled with greater accuracy than hitherto in the match. Hordern troubled Gunn occasionally. The fourth century went up for 36A minutes' play. Rhodes reached Hobbs' score in 390' minutes, as against Hobbs' 269 minutes. Gunn was watchful and patient. He obtained 50 for 122 minutes. A fewminutes before lunch Minnett bowled Rhodes, who, playing forward, just snicked a ball, which was caught by Carter. He was in for 389 minutes, and hit 14 fourers. While he did not give an actual chance, he executed several uppish strokes. It was a great display, but 'hardly as finished and artistic as HoWbs'. Two for 425. '
Hearne next played two from Minnett carefully, but from his third he was caught in the slips. Three for 425. Luncheon adjournment was then made. On resumption Foster joined Gunn! Cotter and Minnett bowled an over, iwhen Matthews relieved Cotter, who dis placed Minnet, whose average stood at two for 45.
Foster \ was immediately aggressive, and quickly ran into the thirties. At 480 Hordern relieved Cotter, who had none for 112. Hordern again steadied Gunn. Armstrong relieved Matthews, whose tally stood at none for 68. Gunn was caught at short leg by Hill, who, fell outstretched in his effort to gather the ball.. He was cheered for his successful effort. Gunn was in 174 minutes and gave a stylish display. He hit six fourers. Four for 486.
Douglas, who succeeded, was caught third ball at silly point by Bardsley in an exactly similar manner as Hill. Five for 486.
Woolley was next. Foster was batting cautiously and scoring slowly., Armstrong was bowling finely, sending down six overs, of which' five were maidens. Wooley was off-driving Hordern, and registered 500 for 493 minutes. 1 Foster also was hitting Hordern, and reached 50 for 81 minutes. Foster was brilliantly caught left-handed at short-leg, a hot shot, by Hordern, who was applauded. Foster hit four fourers. Six for 513. Mead and Woolley played until the adjournment. Six for 527.
On resuming .Cotter and Armstrong bowled. Runs came freely off Cotter. When 543 was up Minriett relieved him. Woolley was scoring steadily on the leg side. He was cheered for magnificently on-driving Armstrong for six, reaching 50 in 67 minutes. He was soon afterwards caught at mid-on. He hit four fourers and one sixer. Seven for 565. Vine was next. Hordern replaced Min- { nett, who relieved Armstrong. Mead reached 21, and carried England's score to 579, breaking the record of England m a test of 577, made in Sydney by Warner's team in 1903. He was then bowled by a beauty. Eight for 579. Smith succeeded. Kelleway relieved Minnett. Smith drove Kelleway for two hoisting 587, breaking the record for tests of 580, made by Australia in Sydney in 1894. Cheers went up when Smith was caught at mid-off. Nine for 58«, Barnes was caught from a forward stroke at short-leg. The innings lasted 588 minutes.
Hill received another ovation on returning to the pavilion. Australia's fielding improved upon Saturday's, when the slip fielding was particularly poor. Carter's wicket-keeping, was excellent. Tjhe extras comprised 2 byes, 4 leg-byes, 4 wides, 9 no-balls. Carter and Kelleway opened to the bowling of Foster and Barnes. Douglas relieved Barnes after the first over.
