BAND CONTEST.
NORTH ISLAND ASSOCIATION.
By Telegraph—Press Association. Gisborne, Last Night. Brilliant weather favored the inauguration of the fifteenth annual contest under the North Island Brass Bands Association, which is taking place here. There was a very large and enthusiastic attendance at the Park racecourse this afternoon, where a reception and garden party was held. After traversing the main streets the visiting bands entrained to the Park. The Mayor and' the ohairmen of various local bodies, including Mr. Hunter Brown, of Wairoa, welcomed the bands, Lieut.-Col. Pringle, of Wangahui, on behalf of the association, and also E. R. B. Holbein, secretary oi the association, responding. Each hand in turn then played one of ite own selections, and later the bands together, under the baton of Lieut. Herd, gave the "Conqueror" march. During the afternoon the visiting bands were entertained by the ladies of the district. Solo competitions in connection with the band contest were commenced at His Majesty's. Theatre to-night.. According to visiting bandemen, the attendance constituted a record.
In the E Flat Soprano cornet solo competition there were six competitors. Results:—W. Summers (Wanganui City) 43 points, 1; W. Crombie (Waihi Federal) 42, 2; F. C. Wilkinson (Gisborne City) 40, 3. Other entrants were: L. Neighbours (Westport Garrison) 39, B. Bowater (Palmerston North) 37, A. Letherby (Whangarei Municipal) 36. The Euphonium solo attracted nine competitors. Result:—W. Harris (Gisborne City) 45 points, 1; C. Mills (Waihi Federal) 44, 2, A. E. Fulljames (Whangarei Municipal) 43, 3. Other entrants: W. T. Gray (Wanganui City) 30, H. McCaskill (Westport Garrison)' 37, A. A Whiting (Wanganui City) 37, R. Tender (Gisborne City) 36, J. Harvey (Palmerston North) 36, J. Elder (Masterton Municipal) 36. The judge, Lieut. Herd, expressed himself very highly pleased with the euphonium section. It was, he said, a veritable labor of love to judge the work of at least three of the competitors. With regard to the soprano section, Mr. Herd noticed the lack of brightness. The cash takings for to-day amounted to over £llO, and to this can he added the sales of season tickets, and from other sources another £IOO.
