'■• Oh Tuesday, in my Stratford yards, I had a Very heavy entry of all classes of cattle'. Some, flne ; lines of bullocks were yarded, some 300 in all,,and the&e, with the other large entries, attracted buyers from all parte of Taranaki and Wanganui districts. Bidding throughout the day was good for most classes, especially bullocks, which were all sold at the hammer after spirited competition.- A good number of weaners were penned, but only the better done cattle were seld. Two and a-half years steers were not enquired for. A small pen of good-con? ditipned Shorthorn 18-months steers, on account of Mr. T. Vickers, of Midhirst, met with keen competition, and realised £3 10s fid. Prices realised were: Weaners (good) £1 2s 6d to £1 9s, grade Jersey weaner heifers £1 lis, grade Shorthorn good weaner steers £1 13s, 0-months heifers £2> 15 to 20-months heifers' £2 8s to £3 7s, 18 to 20-months steers £3 4s to £3 10s fid, 18-months mixed £2 12s <sd, 2-year heifers in calf £3 15s to £4 Gs Gd, poor do. £3 7s fid, bulls £1 8s to £4 Bs, Holstein 18-months bull £3 Bs, fat heifers £4 5s to £4 7s 6d, fat cows (according to, quality) £4 14s to £5 17s, forward cows £3 10s 6d to £4 ss, store cows '£2 4s to £3 2s fid, store 3% to 4-vear bullocks £5 5s fid, £5 14s 6d, £C *los, £6 12s, £6 lfis. On Wednesday at Stony River the yards and paddocks were, crowded to overflowing with both sheep and cattle, and I would again impress upon vendors the necessity of forwarding entries for advertising, as it gives me a much better chance of securing outside buyers. There was good competition for most lines of young cattle and store cows, but 2 1 steers air! forward cows wore not quite so saleable, and several pens of these went home. A good number of weaners were penned, but only the better quality met with any competition. Bidding for small and poorly done lines was very slack. Mixed weaners (ordinary) made £.l 2s, good £1 5s (id to £1 Bs, poor 12s fid to 10s, yearling steers £1 lGs fid to £2 10s, colored 18-mouths steers £1 lis fid, 15 to 18months steers £2 10* fid to £3 7;, 18months mixed (good) £3 4s fid, 18months heifers (no demand), 2-year heifers £3 10s, bulls £2 7s to £7 10s; stags £5 4s, 2 1 / 2 -year steers £4 to £4 13s, springing heifers £4 10s, cow in milk £4 lGs,' store cows £1 11k to £3 ss. forward cows £3 12s to £4 Ss, fat cows £4 14s to £5 Ss, pigs £l, lambs 6s 3d, 8s Gd, 9s,'ewes lis. quality to a good l attendance. Owing to the very heavy yarding in my cattle pens, the sheep' fair, by the courtesy of | Messrs Young, Hobbs- and Co., was held 'in their yards. At Burnside the following were the ruling prices:— ~. , Sl, ee p—1834 were yarded, a small yard- 1 ing, consisting' principally of ewes of good quality. Owing to the of the yarding, competition Was' fairly animated, and prices were slightly higher than last week. Beat wethers sold- up_ to 22s 6d and ewes to 23* Lambs to-' tailed 551, the comparatively small yard-' ing being probably due to the' fact/that sellers are holding back their consignments until next week, when the freezer opens. The sale opened at rates a trifle better than last week, but receded before the close of the sale. Best lambs! 15s 6d to 17s 9d, medium 14s to 15s 3d. Cattle—l37'Were yarded. The local consignments were for the most part only fair and inferior quality, but there was a line of 22 magnificent Shorthorn bullocks from the North Island forward. As the latter were not to be sold until fairly late the bigger buyers were not offering very keenly for the ordinary cattle, and, therefore, notwithstanding the fact that the yarding was by no means a big one, prices were practically on a-par with ,£hose ruling last ,w4ek. It was confidently anticipated that the North Island cattle would top the mar-, ket at quite £5 per head. • ■ © JOHNSONVILLE.
