WAITAKA .BOROUGH COUNCIL. (Prom Our Own Correspondent.) The monthly meeting of the Waitara I Borough, Council was held on Wednes-j day evening, 7th inst. Present:—Mr. J W. F. Jenkins (Mayor), Crs. Rattenibury, • Birdling, Langman, Klenner, Black, and Tarte.
The appointment of a town clerk in J place of Mr. Thos. Buchanan, who has j resigned from that postion, waa considered. There were eleven applicants, After a short discussion the council left three names whWh were to be balloted for, namely, Messrs. Hickson, Farmer, and C. H. Tate. The first ballot resulted as follows: Farmer 5, Tate 5, Hickson 2, leaving Messrs. Farmer and. Tate to be balloted for. The .Mayor stated that the final selection for clerk should be adjourned awing to there being a doulbt as to whether C. H. Tate is old enough to take the position should he be chosen, and if it is not legal then Mr. Fanner will get the appointment. The borough solicitor's opinion is to be obtained. The clerk reported that Cr. Brabant had resigned as a member of the council. Mrs. Cleave wrote asking the council bo repair a culvert in front of residence occupied by A. Lash. The trustees of the Roman Catholic school wrote asking that the footpath leading 'to the new school be put in order. The secretary of the Fire Brigade wrote asking the council to give the brigade permission to make a charge for its members attending halls while concerts were proceeding; also asking the I council for subsidy now due to the bri- J gade.—The subsidy was voted, but the ] council has no authority re charging for attending at halls. The Clifton County Council's offer of £IOO per annum towards the new bridge was accepted by the council. A letter of sympathy is to be forwarded to Mrs. Fitaherbert, of New Plymouth, .in her sad .bereavement in the loss of her husband. An auctioneer's license was granted to :W. F. Jenkins. The waterworks overseer reported that several new connections had been made during the month. Everything at the, intake was satisfactory, but owing to shortage of labor the madn into the' freezing works had not yet been completed. The accounts passed for payment totalled £240,178. . The New Zealand Shipping Company's Torigariro completed loading in the roadstead on Wednesday. The following cargo was shipped for London:—l943qrs beef, 1428 carcases mutton, 4827 carcases lamb, 779 boxes frozen "sundries, 2347 bales wool, 11 Wales leather, "97 | tallow, 48 casks oleo, 47 casks pelts, 0 ■ casks casings. The African and New Zealand Shipping 1 Company's Drayton Grange arrived in the roadstead on Thursday morning, and i completed loading Friday afternoon. The i following cargo was shipped for West of ; England:—lSOOqrs beef, 1700 carcases i muititon, 2000 carcases lamb, 50 casks ■ tallow.* '
