PREFERENTIAL TRADE.
CANADA'S POSITION. liy Cable—Press Association—Copyright, London, February 8. The letter from Mr. Foster, Minister of Commerce, on Canadian reciprocity, sets out that Canada has already admitted British colonies, including the West Indies and the Dominions of New. Zealand and South Africa to the advantages of her British preference, amounting to about 30 per cent, Mr.. Foster states that it seems too bad not previously to have been able to arrange with Australia. Canada is desirous, both on sentimental grounds and for reasons of equal advantage to both countries, that the anomaly should be removed as speedily as possible. Canada is prepared to give substantia] preference on all articles of export in return for a substantial preference on her goods, with a free entrance for some of her natural products. Mr. Foster asks Mr. Tudor to make proposals, and promises to pursue the negotiations to a finish. He adds that once preferential inducements are added, the steamship communications will be better, and the people will become more intimately acquainted and interested in each other. Should Mr. Tudor prefer the proposals to come from Canada, he will be glad to frame suggestions, provided he is assured that the Commonwealth is prepared to follow them to their completion.
