THE BRISBANE STRIKE.

.«. _ r - INCREASED ACTIVITY. STRIKERS' NEW SCHEME. EMPLOYERS' FIRMNESS. By Cable —Press Association—Copyright. Brisbane, February 9. The Strike Committee is displaying increased activity. ' The trend of the latest proposals is to throw the burden of the fight on the j unions concerned in the main arteries of trade, and gradually to resolve a general strike into a sectional strike involving seamen, waterside workers and coal miners. Unionists returning to work are to contribute funds to keep those mentioned on strike indefinitely. This is a counter-proposal to extending the trouble throughout Australia. Ample funds are coming forward from other States, and there is every prospect of a prolonged struggle. The employers are showing unprecedented firmness regarding whom they re-employ. At the employers' meeting on Wednesday a master butcher stated that the men returned to work of their own volition. The Strike Committee replied by calling them out again, and now all I are out, and a meat famine is threat- j ened. Practically a full tram service is run- ' ning. The manager states that the only thing to interfere now will be the exhaustion of the coal supplies. Enquiries have already been sent to Japan with a view of importing coal to Brisbane. As vessels arrive the seamen are called out. They are considered one of the principal factors in the fight. The committee hope through their agency to completely paralyse trade. Melbourne, February 9. A meeting of the federal executive of the Tramway Employees' Association will be held on Tuesday to arrange for a ballot on the question of a general strike of the tramway employees of Australia. The lumpers take no exception, but state-that if free labor is employed there will be trouble. FALSE ALARM. ONLY ONE AUTHORITYEMPLOYERS. Received 10, 1.30 a.m. Brisbane, February 9.
