LAWN TENNIS.

—.—' FITZROY DEFEAT INGLEWOOD. Four ladies and six men from the.Fitzroy Club met a similar' number from the Ingle wood Club on the lattef's lawn yesterday afternoon. A very close struggle for supremacy resulted in the suburban club winning by three points. The match was particularly interesting, as the issue waa in doubt right to the conclusion. When the last set was commenced, Fitzroy had a lead of one point. Miss Potier and Smith, however, scored six ? games whilst their opponents were scoring four, when play had to be stopped owing to the light failing.. At a meeting of delegates to the Taranaki Lawn Tennis Association on Wednesday Mr. D. M'. Kean, of Wellington, forwarded a draft copy of rules of the tournament, which contained the follow- < ing:—An inter-association lawn tennis, t tournament, open to all associations in the North Island of New Zealand affili- - 1 ated directly with the New Zealand Lawn Tennis Association, shall 'be held s annually on Easter Saturday and JMon-' i day, and, if necessary, on Easter Tues- .' day. The first tournament shall be held ' at Auckland. A meeting of. delegates.' shall be convened at Easter in' each yearv by the association within. whose terri-'' tory the tournament is held in that year. Such meeting shall decide where the tournament shall be held in the following year. The management of the tournament shall devolve upon the local association, which association shall noti- ■ fy all other associations not later than February .1 of the place where the next. j tournament is to be held. Entries must ' be made in writing and reach the secretary of the local association not later .than March 1. Any association may 1 send, a team of four men and four ladies to compete in any tournament. The personnel and order of merit of each team . is to be stated when entry is made —(1) of the team as singles players in the two . classes of men and ladies, and (2) of two pairs for men's doubles', two pairs for ladies' doubles, and four pairs for combined doubles.. , The players in each' men's double shall both be different from the players in the other, and so in the ladies' doubles and combined doubles. Each team shall play every other team, i.e., the competitors in each class (singles and doubles) shall play the corresponding players in the opposing team t for the best three advantage sets. The" ' winner of each team v. team contest shall be determined by the number of individual matches won, and, if those be equal, by the number of sets won. The team winning the tournament shall be the one which has won the greatest num-' ber of team v. team contests, and if those be equal the contest shall be decided, by the number of' individual matches won, and if those be equal,, by the number of sets won. Any association may enter a team of less than four • men and four ladies, but each individual match in which it is not represented shall be deemed to have been lost by two sets to nil. Every entry must be accompanied by a fee of £2 2s, which shall become the absolute property of the local association. The local association shall bear all expenses and be entitled to all profits of a tournament. VARIOUS MATTERS. . _ The secretary was instructed to circularise clubs as to what make of balls the Taranaki Association should use at the next meeting. In regard to a case in point, the Hawera Club asked if a player was allowed to be a member of and play for more than one club. The meeting decided to reply in the negative. Upon the question being raised by the. Wavcrlev Club, it was decided to reply to the effect that the Association could' not undertake to notify clubs of every item of business transacted. Affiliation to the Association was granted to the Park and Tarata clubs. The secretary was instructed to enter a team for the tournament, which this year is to be held in Auckland at Easier time. Messrs. J. C. Nicholson, A. G. Wallace and C. J. Dickie were appointed a selection committee to pick a representative team for Taranaki. The meeting also recorded its approval of the proposed rules of the North Island Tnter-association Tournament.
