HURRICANE IN THE ISLANDS.
VESSEL'S NARROW ESCAPE. j By Telegraph—Press Association. Auckland, Tuesday. News brought by the overdue steamer Croydon, which arrived from San Francisco this morning after a 45 days' passage, reported that the delay was caused by unfavorable weather. The Croydon escaped from Nukualofa, Tonga, during a hurricane which, according to the pilot who took the vessel out, had destroyed half the town and had wrecked every launch in the port. No further details are available. The Croydon lost some loose hampers and a quantity of deck cargo.
The timber steamer Hormelein, which arrived this morning, encountered a hurricane in latitude 72 west, and had all her masts carried away and her bulwarks smashed. Two .boats were also smashed, and three or four thousand feet of timber washed overboard.,
