At the Westralian swimming championship carnival, the 220 yards breaststroke was won by Finlay (Westralia), in 3min 12sec—a world's record. 100 Yards (free style).—Longworth 1, Stenberg (Westralia) 2, Springfield (Queensland) 3. Won by several lengths. Time, 58 4-ssec. LADIES' TOURNEY. Received 4, 5.5 p.m. Sydney, February 4. The ladies' 100 yards swimming championship of New South Wales was won by Miss Pearce. Time, lmin 20 3-ssec. j AUCKLAND CARNIVAL. WORLD'S RECORDS PUT UP. By Telegraph—Press AsMtiatioii. Auckland, Last Night. The final swimming carnival in connection with the Sydney team's visit to Waitemata Club, was held in the Auckland graving dock yesterday afternoon before about 2000 spectators. The swimming was of a high standard, and several records were broken.
Miss Durach, the Australian lady champion, put up two world's records for ladies' swimming. She -swam 440 yards in ,6min 42sec, beating vfous iecord by lOsec. She' also swairi 50 yards in 31sdc. M. E. Champion reduced his New Zealand mile record from 25min to 24min 39 4-ssec.
A. W. Bary (Sydney) swam 100 yards in 59 4-saec. L. Solomons (Sydney) covered 5 yards in 26sec. Both times are inside New Zealand records, but as there is a rule whereby no New Zealand records by swimmers from other States are recognised unless the swimmers have resided in the Dominion three months, the old records still stand.
( Waitemata won the inter-club contest with Sydney by 19 points to 14. In this contest the races decided on Saturday were the 100 yards and the mile,;, both scratch events.
A. W. Barry (Sydney) won the 100 yards. L. Boardman (Sydney) was second and L. Solomons (Sydney) third. The, mile resulted: M. E. Champion (Waitemata) • 1, C.. W. Elson (Waitemata) 2, E. J. McQuillan (Waitemata) 3. Purnell (Sydney) was fourth. Won by 75 yaTds. The three Sydney men in the race were hopelessly outdistanced. The principal of the other events resulted as follows: 50 Yards Ladies' Handicap.—Miss J. Maokay (16sec) 1, Miss Durach (scr) 2. Won by a touch. 50 Yards Invitation Scratch Race.— Solomons 1, Barry 2. 100 Yards Breast-stroke Handicap.— Jerrom (Waitemata) 2sec, 1; Morton (Waitemata) scr., 2. Time, lmin 30 l-ssec. Mr. B. C. Freyberg, who was a few years ago champion ewimmer of the Wellington schools, performed a remarkable feat on Sunday last, - when he swam from Te Aroha to'Paerba by means of the Waihou river, the distance covered being 35 miles. The swimmer, who was accompanied by a boat, swam the whole distance without touching land or boat, and completed his difficult task after being in the water ten hours.—Auckland Star.
