TURF TOPICS. ! (By "Moturoa.") The Canterbury Eacing Club's summer meeting will be concluded at Riccarton to-day, the principal events being the Middle Park Plate, of 500 sova, run over 6 furlongs, and the St. Albans Handicap, one and a quarter miles. Principal interest centres in the weight-for-age Middle Park Plate, for which the following horses were paid up for: Bon Ton, Ngatapa, Canute, Autumnus, Brown Owl, Winning Way, Counterfeit, Stardancer, and May Dalrymple. Sir Geo. Clifford won the race with Antagonist last year, and his elect looks hard to beat to-day. Autumnus has most friends, but it is a matter of Tegret that Ermengarde and Prince Soult are not there to measure strides with the Canterbury cracks. The well known horse Advance, now doing stud duty in the Bangitikei district, met with a serious accident on Thursday afternoon. While galloping round a paddock he stumbled and broke a foreleg just above the fetlock. The veterinary surgeon, ,Mr. M. Edgar, set the bone and encased the leg in plaster of Paris, and it is hoped that the black champion will be saved. Advance, who is never stabled, looks the picture of health, and his brilliant coat is Bhining just as it did several years ago. i&l-. though only a few years at the stufl Advance has sired some speedy horses, notably ■ Equitas and The Rover. Bad luck stuck very closely to that speedy horse Expansion, and on Thursday he fell in the Craven Plate at Ric-
carton and broke his shoulder, being subsequently destroyed. In the Wanganui Guineas two years ago Expansion was cannoned into when the barrier rose and loafingj his rider ran into the outsß&e. rails with great force. Afterwards he was operated upon for a respiratory trouble and quite recently won a small race in Southland. The weights for the various event* to be decided at the Taranaki Jockey Club's autumn meeting appear to have given almost universal satisfaction, and the acceptances which close on Monday, February 5, at I) p.m., promise to be exceptionally large. Continuance put up, a wonderfully good gallop in the First Hurdles at Gisborne, carrying 12st 91bs and cutting out the mile and a half in 2min 4fisec, j which must be just about record time 1 for the colony. j The Gisborne course in summer is al-
ways a fairly fast one, but the times ( recorded on Thursday were—taking into J consideration the quality of the horses running—almost too good to be true. Our Queen was timed to do six furlongs in lmin Msec, and Birldine took 2min 9 2-ssec to cut out the ten furlongs la the big handicap. It was a day of fast horses and slow watches! Culprit ran a great race in the Filly i Stakes on Thursday, but could not foot it with Special Form, the latter being in receipt of no less than 491b5.! The weight-for-age, scale and allowances to maidens places a well performed three-year-old at a great disadvantage in the Filly Stakes, and the allowances might easily be made more equita-ble.
