RIFLE SHOOTING.
CONCLUDING DAY'S SHOOTING. ROOT WINS THE CHAMPION BELT. The Taranaki Rifle Association meeting was concluded at the picturesque Rewa Rewa range, Waiwakaiho, yesterday, in summery weather condition. The wind, however, was rather tricky, and this and the sun affected shooting at the longer ranger. During the day there were a number of visitors at the range, including several members of the fair sex, Mr .H. J. Okey, M.P., and Mr. G. W. Browne, Mayor of New Plymouth. The arrangements at the range were perfect, and extremely creditable to the executive and to the secretary (Mr. T. King), who was energy and courtesy combined. The range trustees certainly give local shots every encouragement by providing up-to-date appointments, which, of course, very much simplify the task imposed on the executive in running the meeting through smoothly, and adds much to its pleasure. Mr. J. C. Legg, of the Hygienic, had charge of the cater- i ing, and competitors were highly pleased j with the fare provided. I Lieutenant-Colonel Okey>-had charge of the shooting, the range officers being Captain Leech (Inglewood) and Lieutenant Salmond (V.D.), Hawera. Sooting started at 8 a.m., and though kept at without any delay, it was nearly halfpast six before the last shot was fired in the teams match. T*o marking again was very satisfactory, only a few challenges being allowed. The first match.shot was the Stratford match, at 800, 900 and 1000 yards, seven shots at each range. This was won bv Private Gilshnan (Patea) with a score of 93. The Patea match, ten shots each at 1000 yards, went to Lieutenant Willis, with the fine score of 47, out of a possible 50. The New Zealand champion, Rifleman D. Roots, of Kaponga, annexed the champion, belt with an aggregate of 365, Lieutenant H. Willis. (A Company, New Plymouth) coming second: with a score, of 360. Last year, when seven shots /less were fired at 1000 yards, Sergeant H. Franks (Nelson) won with 337, beating Rlflemaji J. P. Shepherd (Rahotu) by a. point.' For the teams match nine teams were entered, and the baby rifle club (Pohokurd) deserve great commendation for thejr sportsmanlike action.(.'Eleven members, including 10 tyros, T out of these'the club entered twb'-leUms. Althougli'they.did not shoot into a'high position)'still the experience'must be of considerable benefit/ and' the future of such enthusiastic shots should be a bright one. The' match was won by, fie New Plymouth Rifle Club's N6. 1 team, with a score of 476, The same club's No. "2 team and Kaponga, with 465, divide second and, third money. The conditions were 7 shots each at'3oo, 500 and 600 .yards. Last year, when the Taranaki Rifles annexed the, cup, the ranges-were 200, 500and 600 yards.
Athe conclusion of the shooting Lieut - Colonel Okey called on Mr. G. W. Browne (Mayor of New Plymouth), whom he characterised, as an old soldier and an old rifle shot, to present the prizes, which the latter did, accompanying the presentation with a short/speech. He was a believer in compulsory training. It was necessary for our defence that our youth should be properly disciplined. He felt sure that if the authorities fostered shooting they'would arouse an enthusiasm among the. young men that would completely Vemove any sting they might feel m regard to compulsory training. Each competitor, on receiving his prize was awarded a salvo of applause, and before dispersing cheers were 'given for the ladies, the Mayor, Lieut.-Col. Okey and the secretary.
