NEW FREEZING WORKS.
FARMERS WARNED OF THE AMERICAN BEEF OCTOPUS.' - By Telegraph—Press Association. Invercargill, Last Night. A function which attracted at least 400 people to Makarewa to-day was the opening of the Southland, Frozen Meat Company's new works there.' The works aSe probably the most up tp date in the Dominion, being roomy, well lighted and ventilated, and having the very latest' and best machinery and appliances. The works cost over £30,000, and embrace not only usual freezing works operations, but all manner of side lines and by-pro-ducts. The company possesses 500 acres freehold, which it proposes to enrich as a farm with fertilising agencies from the works.
Mr. J. C. Thomson, M.P., in the course of a speech urged shareholders to retain their shares, as he foresaw the introduction of American methods in New Zealand, and he warned farmers that if the capital of such institutions got into the hands of one group they would have the producers at their mercy .
