TURF TOPICS. (By "Moturoa") The Canterbury and Gisborne summer meetings open on Thursday. Red White and Blue, a good winner down south, is a half-sister to Paritutu, being by Blue Jacket—Yattaghan. As anticipated, Black Northern won a double at Takapuna, bringing up a record of four starts, four firsts—there's rejuvenescence for you! If Golden Loop goes on the right way Mr. J. Smith will have a worthy representative in the Taranaki Cup. The chestnut is let in ; lightly with 6st 12lb. Crown Pearl and Royal Arms are reported to be in great, nick, and they say that the last-named is likely to turn out first-class over a distance. We badly want a few "stayers" in Taranaki.
Electrakoff had a lot of backers on Monday, but failed to shake off .Gloy in the final stages of the Takapuna Handicap. Gloy is a sticker anyhow! ] The crack horsemen, Qeeley and Gray, each rode three winners at the Takapuna meeting. Monoline was produced for the Hobson Handicap on the second day, and started a warm favorite, winning easily. Red Lupin was responsible for a brace of smart performances at the Shore. With 9st up he won the , Zealandia Handicap, four furlongs, in 51 l-ssec., and on the second day, under Bst 01b, was just beaten by a head over 5y 2 furlongs run in limn 10 l-ssec. Leo Grand, the Waikato-bred pony, is still winting good stakes in India. Dearest finished up strongly .in her races at Trentham and will find many friends if saddled up for the Taranaki Cup.
Mangawakaha appears to be a much over-rated animalj and most punters would prefer Minora at 31bs less in the Okato Handicap. Jargon is still showing signs of lameness, but if quite right should be worth following next month. "Tartar" Julian is a versatile sort of customer. He is equally at home on the flat, over hurdles, 'cross country, and steering the trotter or pacer. In \ the Northern City recently he steered two trotters to victory. i The New Zealand-bred filly loli, by Birkenhead—lsolt, won the Trial Stakes, of 200 sovs, one mile, at the A.J.C. Anniversary meeting the other day.
