The agents of several British shipping companies have lately investigated trade prospects at Pacific ports, with a view to opening a Panama Canal route. Mr. Ballm, of the Hamburg-American line, is visiting the route. THE PROPOSED TOLLS. Received 31, 1.30 p.m. Washington, .January 30. Senator Bristow has introduced a Bill reducing the Panama Canal Commission membership from seven to three, and fixing the ship toll at one dollar per net registered ton, but allowing 60, cents a ton only to American shipowners who agree to allow the use of their vessels as auxiliary cruisers in war time. The tolls will, under the Bill, be'2s cents a ton for coastwise craft complying with the same conditions. The Bill prohibits railroad-owned steamships.
