ALLEGED ILLEGAL OPERATION. By Telegeafh—Press Association. , Christchurch, January 29. Caroline Elstob, a married woman, aged 33 years, died on Saturday morning under circumstances rendering an inquest necessary. The jjost mortem indicated that an illegal operation had bee* performed. The inquest was adjourned till Wednesday. ANNIVERSARY DAY. Auckland, January 29. The anniversary of the foundation of New Zealand was celebrated to-day in fine weather. A general holiday was observed, the principal attractions being the regatta on the harbor, which was somewhat marred by a slight wind, and the races at Takapuna. NAPIER-GISBORNE LINE. Napier, January 29. The ceremony of turning the first sod in connection with the construction of a railway to connect Napier and <3isborne took place this afternoon at Westshore in fine weather. The attendance was very large, and was representative of the whole district. The town was gaily dressed with bunting, and a half-holiday was observed by business people. The ceremony was performed by Sir Joseph Ward, and speeches were delivered by the members for the district. The Premier was also entertained at a complimentary luncheon. MAORI LICENSING ACT. Gisborne, Yesterday. The special court under the Licensing Act to hear the petition against the declared result of the Horouta native licensing poll will sit at Port Awanui on February 7, the presiding magistrates being Messrs. Barton (Gisbome), Dyer (Rotorua) and McCarthy (Napier). AN UNUSUAL CASE. Wellington, Last Night. There was an unusual case in the Magistrate's Court to-day, the managing director of the Nntricia Milk Company bein# fined CJ for having made use of a copy of an analytical certificate, issued under the Sale of Food and Drugs Act, as an advertisement. The prosecution stated that samples of milk had been analysed on two occasions, and, as they were found to be below the standard, warnings were issued to defendant. He kept this quiet. lmt when the analyst's report on a sulneipient occasion was favorable lie published the report as an advertisement.
