Feb. -29—Wanganui Cup. TURF TOPICS. (By "Moturoa.") Takapuna Cup to-day. ElectrakofT promises to start favorite. Weights for the Taranaki meeting are due to-day. A. Olliver, with six wins, was the most .successful horseman at Trentham. Lady Medallist is reported to be striding nlong nicely at Randwick. I Ben Deeleywwats t .busy at the Wellington. meeting. In three days he had twenty-one rides, including three winners. Millguard, a son of Treadmill, changed hands in Melbourne recently at 120'/jgns. The successful lightweight, B. Curran, will probably ride Electrakoff in his Takapuna engagements. Bleriot lias only to run up to his Ellerslie form to make a good showing in the Calliope Handicap this afternoon; Golden Loop was well backed each start at Trentham, but finished outside; a place each time. The • horse should be in better trim by the time the Wa- ' nganui rolls along. S'trathmoira has been paid up for the Hauraki Hurdles at Takapuna, but will have to be well to give weight to' Westerly and Lloyds. - Taranaki horses entered: for the Wanganui Cup, include Lady Menschikoff, Sandy Pauj, Eoyal Arms, Jargon, Plantation, and the ever-green .Uhlando. A Melbourne paper states that Lord i Kelvin has at last struck form and the | New Zealand-bred horse should pick up I a heat shortly. I _ The Auckland Cup winner, Santa Rosa, | is said to be moving nicely on the tracks and the black horse and his worthy stabkmate, Waimangu, will probably contest the Wanganui Cup next month. Black Northern won a double at Whangarei recently, and is evidently, back to his old form. The black melding is; not badly treated with lOst lib in the Orewa, Hurdles at Takapuna. Jockey B. Deeley rode a confident race on Ireland in the Summer Handicap at Trentham, cracking on the pace from the weird "go." This proved a wise policy, as the top-weights were early in trouble, and the lightly-burdened Kauroa was able to beat them home. Ireland cut out the mile in lmin 40 3-ssec, and won easily by a couple of lengths. Ashby, who was sold for a mere song a few weeks> ago, appears' to be fairly sound again, and that being so may run well at Takapuna. The chestnut rattled off three furlongs in 38sec at Ellerslie one" recent morning. . . j Royal Scotch's slashing run at the finish of the City Handicap on Wednes-. day raade it appear that the black colt might have won if hj« had been helped with a clear passage; -His next engagement is in the Middle Park Plate at Riccarton next week, for which he already has many admirers. The horses engaged at Riccarton next week are, with the exception of Counterfeit, Masterpiece, Culprit, and Royal Scotch, a -very moderate lot. For the Midsummer Handicap tlw* alleged favorites are Byron and Counterfeit. The following horses have been nominated for the Wanganui Cup, one mile and three-quarters: Counterfeit,' Santa Rosa, Waimangu, Domino, Coromandel, Brown Trout, First Battery, Jargon, Julian, Deaiest, Plantation, Aberbrothock, Midnight Sun, Lady Menschikoff,' Maxwell, Kauroa, Projectile, Undecided, Royal Arms, Miscount, Idealism, Iney, Merrivonia,, Los Angelos, Sandy Pajil, Spectre, Tiresome, Bronze, Goodwin Park, Vi, and Uhlando. North-East is doing slow work and looks very well, ife should pay his way before the winter gatherings are over, but there is little chance of him' being at his begt at the Wanganui meeting next month. Probably the best-backed horse away from the course on Monday was Waiouru for the Newmarket, Handiqap at Foxton. They kept it very quiet at .home, but .some of the layers knew all about it when the big dividend was flashed through. With seven wins the Highden horses gathered in,the. goodly sum of £1325 at Treritham, and added to the mafly successes gained bearers of ihe popular "blue and buff'; this should help to place the najne of Highden very high on the list of winning owners this season. Trainer Geo. Price has been very lucky during the last few sc&sqn, .and his winnings should '.tie "something" Worth handling.'
