PANAMA CANAL.
HOW IT WILL BE WORKED. A BIG MAINTENANCE BILL. Washington, January 21. The Inter-State and Foreign Commerce Committee, which has just returned from a visit if inspection to the Panama Canal, is determined to fight against the proposal to allow American ships a reduction of tolls. The chief engineer on the works declares that the maintenance and operation of the canal will cost £5,000,000 a year. Ships will not be allowed to use their own power when passing through the great water-way, but will be taken along by means of electric hauling machines.
