EXCITEMENT AT OTAKI.
PICNIC PARTY'S ADVENTURES. Otaki, Tuesday. There were several anxious persons in. Otaki last night" owing to a pienic party which had gone out to Kapiti failing to return within some hours After the appointed time. The party, after spending the day on the island, made to return about 5 o'clock, but on arriving at the Otaki beach were unable to land, and many attempts were made with a dinghy to assist the party, but aJI failed. There was i nothing else to do but steam for Waikanae, and thig was accordingly done, but the launch struck a sand-bank and lqft the picnickers in an awkward predicament till released. On arrival at the Waikanae beach all was well, but a five-mile walk over rough roads was not at all pleasing, especially to the ladies of the .party. At the end of, the walk all were regaled with light refreshments, i and after many misgivings arrangements were made with a goods train to convey the partv to Otaki, which ■ place was reached between 2 and 3 o'clock this morning. Wives, brothers, sisters and relatives were found in a perturbed state of mind, and many will remember the holiday for many years.
