EDUCATIONAL.

A USEFUL PROPOSAL. By Telegraph—Press Association. Auckland, Last Night. Mr. E. C. Banks, a member of the Auckland Education Board, lias made a suggestion to overcome the objection of the Education Department to the erection of a school unless an attendance 1 of more than a score of pupils is assured. He proposed that in new districts shelter sheds should first be built to serve as temporary school buildings until the full complement of'scholars would be available for the use of proper buildings. Upon the erection of the latter the temporary buildings might be used as shelter sheds. Mr. Banks wfent .to the extent of waiting on the Department in order to present his proposal. , At to-day's meeting of the Board the chairman (Mr. J. J. Garland) made favorable comment upon the suggestion. He moved that, in order to test its efficacy, the board's architect be instructed- to prepare plans for "shelter shed school" to cost about £SO, and that the same be submitted to the Department with a view to the erection of a building in the district of Moumoukai. This course was unanimously decided upon.

IMPORTANT NEW DEPARTURE. Wellington, Last Night. An important new departure was resolved upon by the Victoria College Council to-night, when it was decided definitely to establish lectureships in commerce, in accountancy subjects, and in such legal subjects as are required of candidates for the Bachelor of Commerce degree. Some time ago the Coun-, cil considered the question of establishing the lectureships, but nothing could then be done, owing to financial considerations. However, these have been overcome by the generous subsidy from the New Zealand Society of Accountants, and the Council was thus enabled to take action. The Council received a report from a sub-committee appointed to interview the applicants for lectureships, and subsequently made the following appointments, each tenable for the year 1912:—Lecturer in commercial subjects, J. 8. Barton, at a salary of . £250 per annum; lecturer in legal subjects, Mr. W. F. Ward, at a salary of £IOO per annum.

A new research scholarship in physics was allotted by' the Council tai'-Mr. M. Alexander, B.Sc., of Otago University. The scholarship, which is worth " £.IOO per annum, is due to the generosity' of a .donor who wishes to remain, anonymous. .. .....v* ■".«
