BOROUGH COUNCIL.
ADJOURNED MEETING. The adjourned meeting of the Borough Council was held at 7 o'clock last evening. Present: Crs. Kibby, Jackson, Hartnell, Buttimore, Buxton, Clarke, Mannix, Morey, Gilbert, Stocker. Cr. Clarke was. voted to the chair. His Worship the Mayor and Cr. Ambury arrived later, when Cr. Clarke vacated the chair. The two late councillors, were under the impression that 7.30 was the meeting hour. MERGING HENUI ROAD DISTRICT. The clerk of the Taranaki County Council wrote requesting the following i letter, which was brought up in Oc- j tober, 1910, be again brought forward. He asked the Council to reconsider their decision of November, 1909, declining to sign a petition praying for the merg- j ing of the old Henui Road District. The j position of the area at that time was truly pitiable, as they had, neither a controlling authority nor a road. Their mean 3 of access, the old Hospital road, was in an impassable condition at the upper end. The Council felt reluctant to constitute the area into a road district under the Road Board's Act, 1908, but they reeognise that something must be done if a merger cannot be effected. — The matter was deferred. ABATTOIR REPORT.
His Worship the Mayor and Cr. Buxton met the manager, Mr. Sole, and the butchers' represtntative, and reported | that in view of the faifct that the Council • would have to incur considerable expense, in providing facilities for slaughtering and boning, the Manawatu and Taranaki, Meat Exporting and Canning Company, Ltd., be informed that if they will state the number of sheep and lambs they are prepared to guarantee to have slaughtered at the abattoirs per month for the t first three years, the Council will be prepared to state what the killing charges will be. j That, subject to the same being packed to the approval of the manager of the abattoirs, the spares for the freezing machinery now, held by Messrs. J. B. McEwen & Co. be purchased for the sum of £lO 14s. That the borough engineer be instructed to have the drain through No. 4 paddock cleaned out. That a steam pipe be laid from the boiler to the outhouse. That the borough engineer be instructed to make provision for carrying the overflow from the water trough into No. 2 paddock. MOTOR SPEED. The question of excessive motor traffic was brought up, Cr. Kibby pointing j out that an accident would be happening Consequence of the pace at which motorists drive round corners. He suggested an asphalt crossing over the Jgravel. Cr. Ajnbury thought five miles an hour round corners would be reasonable. It was resolved, on the motion of Crs. Stocker and Ambury, that the borough engineer be instructed to submit a report upon the question of laying down asphalt crossings for the purpose of limiting the speed of motor cars. NUMBERING THE HOUSES. It was decided that the estimates committee be requested to make provision for the numbering of houses in the borough. ACCOMMODATION. ! The executive committee is to report at the next meeting of the Council upon providing further seating accommodation in the Council Chambers. WHAT THE PAPER SAID. The Mayor said it had been stated in the paper that the water supply was bad, and while the paper advocated assistance in helping the backblock settlers and improving the harbor it was not going to help the town by condemning the i water supply. He was sorry to see.it, as analysis showed the' water installation was as good as any in the Dominion. Cr. Morey referred to sediment that he had seen in the water. Cr. Gilbert said that was only one man's opinion in the paper, Cr. Clarke said that an alteration was required, as there was something wrong with the filter. He was not altogether convinced that the writer in the paper was wrong. He had heard some strangers remark about the water not being good. It may be that it was after a fresh in the river. The Mayor said if there was any reason to believe that such was the case the engineer's attention should be called to it. In reply to a question the Mayor said that the remarks appeared in a leaden dealing with things generally. ASSISTANT ELECTRICIAN. Six applications for the above position were received for the position of assistant electrician, and the electric light committee were appointed to deal with thetti, after the names and testimonials were read to the councillors.
