PRESENTATION TO MR. HINE. A movement is afoot to make a presentation to Mr. J. B. Hine, M.P. for Stratford, by his supporters throughout the electorate. The gift will probably take the form of a purse of sovereigns. The response to the committee's request for donations has been very liberal, and the purse promises to be a weighty one. Mr. Hine has been a most attentive member, always giving full consideration and prompt attention to matters of local interest. The date of making the presentation is not yet announced. POSTAL MATTERS The extended service by letter carriers is a boon to suburban residents, and must be equally, if not more, pleasing to the post office counter staff. Up till a few dayß ago the delivery by riers in Stratford was over circumscribed area, with the very large of peoplenave had; to call at the counter for correspondence. As mentioned in this column some time i ago, the public space in our post office i is ridiculously insufficient, and at cer-j tain times during the afternoon it was a case of "first come, first served," and a large number of people awaiting their' turn. _ For the future there..will be ,less' of this, and the business man .with a parcel to post or letter to register will feel -thankful for the change. But it is the suburban residents who are most concerned, and they fully. appreciate, the convenience of the new service. The new system in-regard to'private boxes has been inaugurated,' whereby only such correspondence ! as ; is addressed* to the principal or principals-, or for others definitely addressed" to the box number, is sorted into the' private boxes, correspondence for employees and others being delivered by letter,-carriers. As is usual in the introduction "of' a new method of working, there have been some growls. Employees; consider it} somewhat of a hardship -when they find at night that the letters from the best girl or the best boy must wait till mcrrn.ing, whereas under the.old system they were able to get it from iie-fmpl»yWV» private box. Others who have, contrary to the postal regulations,, been sharing a box with a friend,.aie.,'afec.ted by the change. "One man, one yW,',' is the rule of the postal authorities! t ' > Another complaint, is thats'flme of the carriers, in their 'haste" .to get their rounds completed, m'er&V'blow, a whistle at the gate, and, if ther'ejsjio response [ at once, move on: . to hold a meeting, too, and then matters will be in full swing. Mr. J. H. He has some Silver Wyandotte pullets which commenced laying when only four months and •»e week old. These birds have had no exceptional treatment, were n«t kept housed under the new-fangled system, but were given practically a free range by day in all weathers—just Nature's way. | The Mayor (Mr. J. Masters), chairman of the Borough Council's Works Committee (Mr. N. J. King), accompanied by the town clerk and the borough foreman, visited the headworks of the municipal water supply to-day. The Council is considering the' necessity for doifeg something to improve the quality of the -water, and a system of filtration has been talked of. The borough foreman has a scheme for cleaning out the silt from the bed of the tunnel, and this, he says, can be done at a comparatively small cost. The party was of opinion that the matter must be attended to. / _ St. Andrew's Sunday School ip to hold its annual picnic at the Ngaere Gardens to-morrow (Thursday), leaving here !by the ten o'clock train and returning at about 5.30 p.m. At present the weather threatens disaster to picnicking arrangeStratford sent a good number to see! Discussing to-day the matter of Stratford being' omitted from i: the itinerary of tfye com-1 pany, I heard that the principal reason was that the stage in the Stratford/ lown Hall is-on the small side. A ness man told me-that it was a good job.'
