I MAKETAWA. (From Our Own Oonmipondent.) The spell of fine weather* a week or ao back was taken full advantage of by fanners around, several of whom raised stacks of oats, etc., whilst others m»t the turnip drill to work. In several instances some smart work was done, ani there is no doubt tljat had the fine apel continued, haymaking would have been further advanced than it is. Several farmers got nipped by the rain whick followed, and their hay was lying out for many days. At present indication* are for another turn of fine weather, and everyone on the road is going at high pressure, as there is a lot of stack fodder to come in yet. A resident informs me that on tw« occasions now his safej in which provisions are kept, has been rifled of its contents. If the thief will call *at any house on the road in an open manner he will be supplied with sufficient "tucker" to cause him joy and' enable Win to enjoy his bed instead of prowling around at all hours of the night. The contract, for supplying Boulders in connection with metalling the top portion of Durham road, and for which a loan of £l5O was obtained, has been let ■ to Mr. A. Douch, who will make, a start in a few days. The residents who have had the mud to come through on their ' way to the creamery have had a real - picnic through the very large amount of rain this season, 'and will no doubt thoroughly appreciate' the metal road. The sheep farmers on Durham road , : have been very busy lately. What with [butter farmers, cheese farmers, ,and sheep farmers, we are rather a mixed crowd up this way. r*was informed that Mr. Buckthought, who has a smaH cheesery managed by Mr. McPartland, shipped several tons of cheese, a week ago. The article turned out is first class and is much sought after locally. The sudden change in temperature, caused no doubt by the heavy fall of ; snow on Mt. Egmont.; (and in January, too!), together with the cold N.S.W. squalls, caused Madam Cow to reduce supplies for "home consumption." v . .'■ ■>,;—*, ~ x .
