DISTRICT NEWS

WAREA. (From Our Own Correspondent.) A meeting of the local Hall Committee was held on Saturday night to settle accounts in connection with hall affairs. The hall now stands clear of debt, with about £5 to credit, after paying for the timber and the building of the new room and other charges. i The -weather lately has been a little on the hot and dry side, and farmers have been taking advantage of it to make hay. The Puniho school's annual picnic will be held on the 31st inst., and a social will be held in the school in the evening. The opening of the Glenferrie Tennis Club was held recently in splendid weather, and in spite of several counterattractions there was a good attendance. Mr. James Burgess, in declaring the courts open, remarked that he did not know why he should be selected to open the courts, unless it was that he was the oldest resident of the district (he having been here for about thirty years). When he came here first there was no time for tennis or other sports, but he was pleased now to see that the time had come when people could have a little recreation. He thought the ground was in an ideal spot; a better one could not be got anywhere. In concluding, he called for cheera for Mr. Revell for the gift of the ground, [or whenever ground was wanted for anything Mr. Revell was always the first to offer a piece. He then declared the courts opened. The opening set was played by Mr. Burgess and Mrs. Taylor against Mr. Revell and Mrs. S. Wells. Afterwards tea was provided on the grounds by thelladies and the many good things were much appreciated. Play was kept up till dark, and there has not been a single night since the court was opened that someone has been on it to play. Great credit must be given to the able workers who spent so much time and trouble in putting the ground in playing condition, marking seats, etc.
