UNIVERSITY SENATE. By Telograp*—Press Association. Wellington, Monday.. ' Reference was made in the University Chancellor's address to a question of some agreement being come to in Australia regarding musical examinations and to a possibility of a. representative from the Melbourne University being present during the sitting of the Senate. To-day the chancellor intimated that the I Melbourne representative would not be I present, and expressed the opinion that it would be useless getting people over from Australia in the existing 1 circumstances. The Governor, so far as could be discovered, had not yet moved in the matter of making a grant to the Auckland University College towards the establishment of a Conservatorium of Music in that city. The Inspector-General explained that the position taken up by the Governrnent was that it did not feel justified in- moving in the matter until the movement had been recognised by the university itself. The sum of money asked for was, he understood, a very large! one. J Dr. McDowell (Auckland) ' expressed the belief that the Senate was in complete sympathy with the desire of the Auckland University to establish a conservatorium. The amount asked for was between £2OOO and £3OOO for the first year, with , a diminishing subsidy for successive years. It was hoped in time that the conservatorium would be self-supporting. The Senate, ultimately referred the matter to a special musical committee, which will sit during the present session.

The Senate considered the following motion: That the Senate he recommended to add the following to statutes of the B.A. and B.Sc. degrees, "No candidate for the degree shall be allowed to sit in any subject unless he has passed % college examination itf that subject at a standard equivalent to that of the university examination in the subject." The Chancellor considered that the motion, if passed, would mean a limitation of the power of the college. The local professorial board l asked for free-, dom and; liberty, and this suggestion would apparently interfere with that liberty and freedom if the Senate' passed the motion. Several other speakers were of opinion that if the idea embodied in the motion, was carried out it would really bring' the work the colleges more closely in relationship with the work of the | universities. The motion was approved and referred to the authors and periods committee with an alteration in wording by eliminating ail words after "subject," and the addition of the phrase "at the corresponding stage." The Seriate decided that power should be sought from Parliament for the Senate to confer a diploma in public health. j The points'raised in the Chancellor's address Were referred to several committees for consideration. A resolution from tW Dental' Association favoring the abolition of private apprenticeship for mechanical dentistry and concentrating the whole training it a recognised dental school was referred to the law committee, as was also the following, "That in the opinion 'of the New Zealand Dental Association, it is j inadvisable that the University of New Zealand should grant degrees of D.D.S., and, _ on the other hand, it is of the opinion that the degree of M.D.S. is desirable, and is sufficient to indicate that a graduate lias undertaken satisfactory research work."
