PORT OF NEW PLYMOUTH.
CHAIRMAN'S ANNUAL REVIEW. At the annual meeting of the New Plymouth Harbor Board on Friday, Mr. • r . B. Connett (chairman) presented the .'.)'! owing report: —• (Jeiitlemen.— I have to place before you the annual statement of accounts for the year 1911. The general revenue shows a decrease of £1853 10s 6d as compared with the preceding year. This difference is more apparent than real, mainly due to the fact that one monthly payment for wharfage less being made than to the preceding year. This, together with an amount included in last year's account, which was not, strictly speaking, annual revenue for that year, accounts for £llOB 8s Id, showing a net difference of £745 2s 5d for the year, made up principally by concessions in the rate of wharfage, etc. , The working account shows a net profit of £7859 (is lid for the year. The trade of the port shows a slight increase over 1910, being 87,185 tons for 1911, as against. 80,849 tons in 1910. the ngures for 1911 being the largest ever .handled at the port. Total Ordinary Revenue Received in the General Account by the Board since mo.
LOAN ACCOUNT. The balance of this account at December 31, 1911, was £52,029 3s 6d—£52,000 being on fixed deposit and the balance lying at current account. 'BREAKWATER PROTECTION. The protection work of the breakWater is standing well, and has required very little attention during the year. Thirteen concrete blocks have been placed at the north-west corner, and a small amount of protection work is still required in places. BREAKWATER LIGHT. The board has decided to erect a light at the end of the breakwater for the convenience of shipping. The light will consist of a cluster of electric globes. The work is well in hand, and will be completed during the summer months. DREDGE THOMAS KING. This dredge has worked continuously throughout the year, and has removed 118,240 tons of spoil at a cost of £1389 13s 2d, or at the rate of 2.82 d per ton. DREDGE PARITUTU. This dredger continues to do excel-' lent work at tho wharf,'and has made a considerable improvement in the> depth of water alongside. A berth for ocean 610 ft. long by 90ft. wide, with a depth of 33ft. at low water springs has been prepared, and -i the width is now being extended to 200 ft. from the edge of the wharf. Inshore of tin's berth, at a part of the wharf that has never been used by shipping, another berth has been drpdged out to 16ft. at low water for a length of 280 ft. This berth is suitable for the smaller class of coastal vessel. < During the year the dredger has removed 155,260 tons of spoil with the buckets at a cost of £5748 16s Id, giving an average of 8.87 d per ton. ; Particulars of dredgings by the Paritutu for the past two years:— £ s. d. d. Very little work has been done on the old wharf during the year and only £95 19s 2d has been expended, principally chafing pieces and beams. ■ WHARF WIDENING. A start was made to widen the wharf by 19ft. at the end of March, and a length of 600 ft. has been completed. The remaining section of 380 ft. is now in hand, and the superintendent expects to complete the work about the end of April next. WHARF EXTENSION. The board has decided to lengthen the wharf by 60ft. so as to give an additional berth on the inside of the wharf. The materials required have all been ordered, and the work will lie proceeded with on the completion of the widening. ■ SURVEY OF HARBOR. This work, which I mentioned in my last report, has now been : completed, the cost of same being £133 13s 2d. The whole of the approaches to the harbor have been swept to a minimum depth of 25ft. at low water springs, and have been found to be quite free from obstruction. The work has been carried out under the capable supervision of Captain Newton, harbor master. PLANT, BUILDINGS AND MACHINERY. The sum of £252 2s has been expended during the year on repairs to the plant, etc., and the whole of the board's property is kept in a fair state of repair. Sales of plant and material amounted to £2O 8s Id during the year. ENDOWMENTS. The Public Trustee having deposited the sum of £2OOO with the board as a •ruarantee, the board has granted a further extension of the ironsand leases. The sum will be forfeited if the conditions are not complied with before March 31 next.
The decrease for the year under this heading was £ll9B. SHIPPING. Three hundred and sixty-seven vessels entered and left the port during the past year, their aggregate tonnage being 172,517. Returns for the past thirI teen years are as follow: j
Being a decrease of 22 vessels of 14,313 tons, and an increase of 336 tons in imports and exports. LAND REVENUE. The land revenue received during the .year amounted to £4082 17s lOd, a fall*ing off of £798 12s 6d from the pre,-' vious year. Table of land revenue for the past • sixteen years:— Amount.
This shows a decrease of £798 12s 6d over the previous year. SINKING FUND' 1909 LOAN. The total amount to the,credit of this, fund at December 31 was £ 6960 16s 9d, ' £'6300 being" on' mortgage' and the''Balance, £660 16s 9d, lying at the Bank of New Zealand uninvested. MEMBERS. . The triennial election under the Har- •- bors Amendment Act, 1910, took- place during the year, and resulted in the return of Messrs.' J. B. Connett and. C. E. Bellringer for the New Plymouth; Fitzroy-St. Aubyn Ward, Messrs. N. King and E. Maxwell for the TaranakiEgmont Ward, Mr; C. A. Wilkinson for the Inglewood-Stratford-Eltham Boroughs Ward, Mr. J. McGluggage for the Stratford-Whangamomona Ward. Mr. W. Swadling for the Hawera-Eltham Ward, and Mr. D, J. Hughes for the Waimate West Ward, Mr. E. DockHll being' the Government nominee on the board. HARBOR MASTER. ' Captain W. J. Newton has tendered his resignation from the position .of harbor master at' the. pprt, to , take effect from the ,end of February next. The resignation was accepted with very great regret, and applications have been called to fill the position. • Statement showing vessels, draught, tonnage, etc., which entered the port during the vear ending December 31, 1911:
