Contrasted with the mild sentences inflicted on Russian spies, military circles are bitterly indignant at the action of the Russian court in sentencing a German captain, charged with espionage, to five years in the convict gangs in Siberia. Lieutenant von Cerno, an Austrian, who was senteneed in Germany to three years' imprisonment, had offered his services to the Russian Intelligence Bureau, who sent him to Kiel, where his report was unimportant. Lieutenant Vinogradorff was an active officer of the Russian navy, and was sent to Germany to watch von Cerno. He was only sentenced to three years' imprisonment in a fortress.
LIEUTENANT TRENCH'S CASE. Received 21, 5.5 p.m. Berlin, January 20. The Cologne Gazette asserts that official statements confirm Lieutenant Trench's attempt at suicide and plans to escape.
