BUILDING OF 65 STOREYS
TO COST £5,000,000. New York, January 15., If the Equitable Assurance Society adheres to its present plans, the building that will replace the marble structure now in ruins as a result of Tuesday's big fire will be the tallest in the world. It will be a great towering edifice of 65 storeys, and will cost something like £5,000,000. Upwards, of £10,000,000 worth of stocks and bonds have been taken out of the vault, all of which have been found intact. Although warned that their lives will be endangered, 250 men have started on the work of shoring the walls, as a-pre-liminary to getting at the larger vaults, with which it would be extremely risky to interfere until the tottering walls have been secured against collapse. It is estimated that the disaster has already cost the fire brigade department £20,000 in wages for extra labor.
