SOLOMON AS GAMBLER.
£2,000,000 SUBSCRIBED FOR CHURCH The operations of several mining companies in which £2,000,000 has been invested are being investigated by the Federal Grand Jury, New York, under the direction of the Department of Justice. Those who have been concerned in the companies include Mr. Julian Hawthorn, son of the novelist, Dr. W. J. Morton, son of the discoverer of ether, Mr. J. B. Hanna, nephew of the late Senator Hanna, and Mr. Josiah Quincy, ex-Assist-aht Secretary of State and ex-Mayor of Boston. It is stated that a large number ol Government ofhcials, many clergymen and women, particularly of New England,' bought shares offered at half par value' Mr. Hawthorn wrote a mass of glowing literature for the companies; One alluring pamphlet, entitled "Solomon's Secret," urged the investors to buy stock on the ground that "Solomon was a gambler." He continued: "When Solomon was casting about for the means io build his temple, and adopted the Ophir mines scheme, he was neither shutting his eyes and-jumping at hazard, nor was he playing a sure thing. "Solomon knew he was. taking a risk. Proniaters might be liars or self-deceiv-ed, but do you know how Solomon met the risk? By his profound knowledge of the human heart, and his knowledge oi natural laws. Solomon was not under the delusion that something may lie had for nothing. "Against the treasures of Ophir he staked the treasures of his wisdom. The Ophir was the risk worthy of a king's taking, and Solomon was a king, man, and a gambler enough to take it."
