Wellington, Thursday. i The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Co., Ltd., have received the following cablegram from their London house under date 16th inst.:— Wool.—There was a full attendance at the_ opening of the sales to-day, competition by Home, Continental, and American buyers being active. Th« opening catalogues were fairly representative. As compared with last sale? closing rates prices are about the same for meripo, and higher by about par to 5 per cent, for crossbred wools. By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, Yesterday. The Department of Commerce has received the following cable from the High Commissioner, dated January 17, regarding the opening of the first series of colonial wool sales:— The sales have commenced, and there is great competition. Americans are buying medium crossbreds. Prospects are favorable. The market for merlno» is firm; but not advanced, for crossbreds the market is higher all round by a halfpenny per lb than at last sale. Fortyfive thousand nine hundred bales >of wools are available. ' LONDON MARKETS. London, January 17. Tallow. —Twelve hundred and thirtytwo casks were offered for sale, and 744 sold. Prices unchanged. Silver, 23 l-16d. AMERICAN WHEAT SUPPLY. London, January 17. The American visible wheat supply totals 119,670,000 bushels.
