PULPIT CHALLENGE.

NEW CREEDS'NEEDED FOR THE

PRESENT AGE.

That the very existence of religion de- • pends upon the ability and capacity of its professors to meet the growing needs of every succeeding generation was the keynote of a powerful and outspoken sermon preached by the Eev. H. Mayne Young in Westminster Abbey. "Every age," he said, "has a right to, and demands as good and as clear statements about religion aa possible, and they must be in the 6hape of current coin. Too often our pulpit paper is openly dishonored, and fails to find a market even at a reduction. As for our defaced and-worn-out gold, it is refused at any price. If the Church cannot coin afresh as the currency wears out, the clergy are no better than doctrinal bankrupts. In i that case closed doors and suspended | payment is the only alternative left to the establishment. "What is to become of all the ancient creed and formularies? What is usually done with the old gold? It is simply recalled and melted up with any new gold that we can find in the ends of the earth, then stamped with the hall-mark of the' age and the King's head, and our King is the King of kings and the Lord of lords, and so the gold will be found as good as ever it was, and fit to be used over again. .1 "The day is not far distant when, unless the Church of England freely Testates and remodels her creeds so as to meet the requirements of the age, she will be left stranded on the shores of time, while the tide of this modern life will leave her ever further and further behind—a sad warning 'of the inevitable results of an iron-bound system of wornout dogmas and lifeless traditions."
