NORTHERN ASSOCIATION'S TOURNAMENT. THE PRIZE-GIVING. By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. The annual tournament of the, North- j ern Association concluded on Saturday on Wellington Club's green. The weather was bad, and heavy rain overnight made the greens dead and heavy. Showers fell at intervals during the day and a high wind swept over the ground and did) not ,smprove| /the [play, the' erratic behaviour of bowls causing much amusement.
The tournament, which was the biggest ever held in New Zealand, was a great success all through, ithe arrangements being perfect in every way. Some 560 games were played without the slightest hitch, and the management received warm congratulations. It had been intended to wind up with a big "At Home" on the Wellington green, but the bad weather prevented this, and only some two hundred enthusiasts saw the conclusion of the big carnival. Newitown and Carlton teams met for the final in the Consolation prize competition. The former team comprised I Mayo (sub), J. Sexton, Price, and j Prince (s), and the, latter, Otter, Gaudin, | Lamb and McGregor (s). Half way Newtown was leading by one point. Both I teams played well, Prince's team ultimately winning by 24 to 21. Victoria and Ponsonby teams met, in the final of the Last Try competition. The teams were: Victoria—Tucker, Chapman, Hatch, and Hemingway (s); Ponsonby: Casey, Beecrop, Snadclon, and ! Walker (s). Rain set ill during lunch, , and the wind increased in strength, and ) after playing a, head or two a halt had to be called for some time. The, game afterwards degenerated into something li'ke a farce, anything approaching accuracy being impossible, but seemingly by good play in the last head the teams managed to tie, and an extra head had to be played, resulting in a win for Victoria by 22 to 21. Both teams were heartily cheered. Immediately on the conclusion of the game, the prizes were presented in the tea-rooiu by Mrs. J. J. Keith, wife of the president of the association.
In the championship, the first prize went to the Newtown team (Warrick, Duff, Pollock, and Wylie (s), who each received a trophy valued at £2 10s and a certificate ■with the names engraved thereon, the club also receiving one. The second prize went to the Wellington team—Neilsen, Simm, Allen and Still (s) —who each received a trophy valued at £2 and a certificate with the names engrossed.
In the Consolation prize there were •four trophies valued at one guinea each, and the Last Try prizes were four trophies valued at 30? each.
The winner of the championship also received the Northern Bowling Association's banner and shield.
