THE EQUITABLE FIRE. By Telegraph —Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. The New Zealand representative of the Equitable Life Assurance Society has received advice by cable concerning the recent fire in the society's premises' in New York, that the valuable records are safe, and the vaults containing securities all intact. A PUBLIC SCHOOL BURNED. Auckland, Last Night. . The constable at Te Awamutu has reported to headquarters that the Harapepe Public School was destroyed by fire yesterday. He is proceeding to the itieie to make enquiries. THE RESULT OF HORSEPLAY. Christchurch, Yesterday. A charge of manslaughter, arising out of the death of George Shaw at Leithfield on December 20, was investigated at Amberley yesterday, James Russell being accused. Evidence showed that there was some skylarking in the bar of the Royal Hofel, Leithfield, in the course of which Russell put Shaw on a bench. After more horseplay a lump began to rise on Shaw's neck, and Shaw died as the result of the laceration of : a vein. The evidence showed that there j .vas nothing malicious in Russell's attitude, and the case was dismissed. COOKS' AND STEWARDS' DISPUTE. Wellington, Yesterday. An agreement on practically all points ' was reached in the cooks' and stewards' ' dispute before the Conciliation Council. ' It was agreed that the minimum wages shall be: Chief stewards £lO per month, chief cooks £lO, cook-steward with assistant £lO, cook-stewards without assistant £ll 10s, assistants £4 10s; overtime rates Is per hour. NEW ZEALAND AND RIVER PLATE ( COMPANY. Auckland, Yesterday. The local office of the New Zealand and River Plate Company is advised that at the annual meeting the recommendation of the directors as to the disposal of the year's profits, already published, were approved and a resolution for increasing the capital passed. SLY GROG SELLING CASE. Wellington, Yesterday. In the Police Court to-day, Richard Phillips, proprietor of a fish and chips shop, was fined £ls with costs for sly grog selling in connection with the same affair in which two men were fined for being on the premises. STORING LIQUOR. Ashburton, Yesterday. Thomas Gibson was fined £lO for storing liquor for another man in a nolicense district.
