Caillaux assured the Senate Committee, on his word of honor, that the newspaper allegations that while Finance Minister in the Monis Cabinet he conducted irregular pourparlers with Germany unknown to his colleagues, President Fallieres or M. Jules Cambon, was untrue. M. Clemenceau and M. Bourgeois pressed M. de Selves to say whether he was able to confirm M. Caillaux's statement. M. de Selves said that he could n>t reply, for he owned a double duty ( o truth and to the country's interest. The remark caused a sensation, M. Clemenceau declaring: "You may say this fi> anyone else bat me, because you informed me to the contrary." M. de Selves replied: "You must have misunderstood me." The committee immediately adjourned. At a subsequent private conference between M. Caillaux and M. de Selves the latter announced his resignation.
