EMPIRE PICTURES.
LAST NIGHT'S PROGRAMME. It was stated yesterday that the pro-, gramme to 'be submitted to patrons Df the Empire Pictures last night would be varied and attractive. It is Safe to say that not one of the large audience: who was present would disagree with. that statement; on the contrary, he wculd say it was one of the be3t and most delightful yet thrown on a lo«>l screen. The picture makers are resourceful people. One ..would think they Mould have reaohed the limit of tliei,r resource in the making of pictures to please, amuse and instruct, but it would seem that they have only just begun, have only just scratched the surface, of things. Take the picture shown last night, depicting the training of the eyes and ears, i.e., the officers, of the greatest military organisation the world has yet produced—the Germany army. One ' volumes- aboutytiow .thjs, vast. /.:« machine''is trained, perfected and operated, and then have but a hazy idea of it.all, but "a few. vivid views of the work by the cinematograph drives the thing right honfe and gives, one. an; amazingly 'V.. good idea of the work of training the men destined to lead this powerful army. Or take that other excellent series, "How a Letter travels from Central Africa." All of us have read al>out the Dark Continent, but very few of us will ever be able to visit it. The picture man comes to our aid and places views of the country, the natives and methods in right before us at our own doors. These sort of'pictures are. wonderfully instructive, and wonderfully interesting. These formed but a small part of the programme. There were dramas, there were comics, and they all took hold of one. We cannot conclude this inadequate notice withoutreferringto that .extraordinary dramatic picture, "The Klondyke Steal," the scene of whish is laid in that Arctic yet very picturesque country. The local coloring is splendid, whilst the story is told, or, rather acted., in a way that appeals to the most adamantine. A,GREAT PICTURE. " TEMPTATIONS OF A GREAT CITY." The management has secured at great expense an exclusive star picture, intitled , "Temptations of a Great City,' r a realistic drama of real life, which nas ltad a great run in the big centres of Australasia. Full particulars will be published later.
