WATER FAMINE AT PERTH. By Cable—Press Association —Copyright. Perth, January 8. •There is a water famine in the city, due to the lack of pumping power. The position is aggravated by the extreme heat, which is 105 degre3s in the shade. On Saturday the position at the children's hospital, where there is much mortality, was described as deplorable. FATAL TRAMWAY COLLISION. Sydney, January 7. By a collision between suburban trams at Bondi nine persons were killed and seventeen injured. TRADE WITH HULL. Adelaide, January 8. Mr. Austin Willon, commissioner for the Hull and Bamsley Railway and Dock Company, has arrived. His mission is to promote better trade relations between Australia, New Zealand and Hull. He strongly advocates the direct shipment of produce to English outports. BROKEN HILL MINERALS. Sydney, January 8. The value of minerals exported from Broken Hill last year was £3,101,000, a record. A CONVERT TO CATHOLICISM. • Sydney, January 8. The Rev. Mr. Greer, curate of All Saints' Church, has left the Anglican and joined the Roman Catholic Church. RATE OF INTEREST RAISED. Melbourne, January 8. The Savings Bank Commissioners have decided to increase the interest on all loans to 4% per cent. Previously loans over £2OOO were charged 4 per cent. A SIGN OF PROSPERITY. Sydney, January 8. As showing the prosperity of the State the secretary of the A.M.P. Society reports that there are no arrears of interest on the society's loans on freehold property, toalling £2,000,000. A WESTRALIAN LOAN, Perth, January 8. The Government is floating another £500,000 local 4 per cent, loan at par. The subscriptions include £171,000 oversubscribed to the previous loan. A DESTRUCTIVE STORM. Sydney, January 8. A storm a Collarendebri demolished" the buildings on the-racecourse and unroofed a number of houses, besides doing other damage. IMPURE LITERATURE. Melbourne, January 8. A campaign has been inaugurated against impure literature. Archbishop Carr has approved of it, and the Catholic Federation is requesting Protestant co-operation in the movement.
