LAND SETTLEMENT
CROWN LAND ON THE MARKET. Land settlement should proceed rapidly this summer, with due regard to the limited area of Crown lands stili available. The fertile Hauraki Plain, reclaimed from swamp by a big drainage scheme still in progress, provides a further area of 5000 acres, which will be thrown open for selection on February 19th. This area comprises twenty-one sections, and will be available on the optional system, the half-yearly rentals under renewable lease ranging from £l6 8s 6d to £32 12s. The block lies between the Piako and the Waitoa rivers. The access is from the Waitoa station, by road, 6% miles. On February 26 other areas of land to the number of twenty-five, situated in various parts of Auckland land district, including the King Country, will also be available for settlement. On March 13 there will be thrown open for selection on the renewable lease tenure 993 acres in the Steeples district,, near Nelson. The land is flat and easy rolling country. Thirteen pastoral runs, aggregating 160,000 acres, will be opened for selection in West-land district on February 28. The areas will be leased, subject to auction, for ten year and twenty-one year .jeriods. In Otago two small grazing .uns, totalling 8700 acres, will be open ior lease on February 13, and in Southland, the Terapa estate of 5500 acres, divided into seven sections, will be leased on February 22 for twenty-one years, with perpetual renewal under the terms of the Education Reserves Act.
