Describing their trying experiences they stated that they spent five days and nights' in open boats, which were leaking to such an extent, that.it was necessary for a man to bail continuously. The morning after the Askay struck,, the crew sent a deputation to the Captain asking him to abandon the ship. He refused. A second deputation were likewise refused. Not until the afternoon were orders given to man the lifeboats.
