"Fighting Bob" Evans, or Admiral Evans, whose death is just reported, wa.s born in Virginia in IS4<5, and became an ensign in the United States Navy at the age of 17. He reached his final rank of rear-admiral in 1001. In the course of his career he saw a good deal of active service, and received severe wounds. It was while in command of Yorktown at Valparaiso, Chil'le, in' 1891, during the period of strained relations between Chile and the iUnited States, that his actions earned him his popular name of ''Fighting Boh." In the- war with Spain he commanded the lowa in Sampson's fleet, off Santiago, and took an active part in the battle with Cervera's fleet, July 3, 18i)S., He was Commander-in-Chief of the Asiatic Station, 10024,' and commanded the Atlantic Fleet from 1904 to 1007. When the fleet started on the world tour (1007-!}), in the course of which it visited New Zealand) "Fighting Bob" commanded it until it left the Pacific Coast, when he handed it over to Rear-Admiral Sperry. Admiral Evans retired in 1008. He published his reminiscences in 1001, under the title of, "A Sailor's Log."
