THE TOTALISATOR.
THE NEW SOUTH WALES COMMISSION. By Telegraph—Press Association. Auckland, Thursday. Giving evidence before the New South Wales Totalisator Commission, Mr. Glover, M.P., said his opinion was that the racing clubs deliberately brought into disrepute the bookmaking fraternity as a whole in order to get beiting profits in their own hands. He favored both totalisator and bookmaker. Pressed to say which he would have if he had to make a choice, he admitted that the racing public wanted the totalisator. He believed that if the question was submitted to a referendum both would be abolished. Asked did the totalisator favor the horse owners, Mr. Glover replied no. Asked why, then, the horse owners favored the totalisator, he said certain big men would rather take less odds from the totalisator than bet with the bookmaker. The chairman stated that he had received a cablegram from Sir Rupert Clarke, one of the leading racing men in Australia, stating that he intended to advocate the introduction of the totalisator.
